The Salvation Army's COVID response

This video resource for 11 - 16 year olds is versatile in its use and is suitable for online learning as well as aiding classroom discussions.

There are a range of short clips below to help your pupils explore some of the work The Salvation Army has done throughout the pandemic.

Each video includes a set of discussion questions to aid virtual or live conversations, At the bottom of this page you will find additional ideas of ways you can use this resource.

Working in the food bank during the pandemic meant the volunteers built closer relationships and knew people by name. Do you think it’s important that people getting food were referred to by their name? Why/why not?
‘People deserve respect, attention and love.’ Do you think this is true for everyone, or should it have to be earned?
‘Everybody is a child of God, so these things should be given to them.’ What do you think? Why would the officer’s beliefs cause him to treat people with respect, attention and love?

In the early days of the pandemic, we showed our gratitude to NHS staff by clapping. There are a lot of other key workers who have worked extremely hard during this season. For example, your teachers! Is there something you could do to show them your gratitude?
Make a plan/choice/decision to serve your teachers – this may mean showing your appreciation by listening during lessons, actually working when at home, buying something small for them or just saying thank you!

Read through the following Bible passages and ask pupils to decide if any of the verses have links with the videos. Ask pupils to give feedback on why they think the Bible verses match the videos.

- 1 John 3:17-18
- Proverbs 29:7
- Proverbs 14:31
- Deuteronomy 15:7-11

Give groups a video each and give them five minutes to discuss (in a breakout room if this feature is available on the platform you use) and write down how the video made them feel, one thing they tell us about The Salvation Army and one question they have about the video. Groups could then swap and add to the previous group’s ideas until they have done the same for all the videos. Use the feedback to lead a group discussion.
