MASIC presents: Living Well Together

Karen is a tutor at William Booth College and the chair of the International Theological Council. She has taught about the biblical principles of good disagreement in various settings, including The Salvation Army’s International Symposium on Human Sexuality in summer 2022 and Belonging and Believing: The Big Conversation, an event organised by the UK and Ireland Territory in March 2024.

Andrew is a Christian ethics tutor at Ridley Hall and member of the Church of England Evangelical Council. He served on the co-ordinating group for the Church of England’s Living in Love and Faith project, which published resources about identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage, and was also the editor of Good Disagreement: Grace and Truth in a Divided Church.

Faye is a building surveyor from Southampton, an adherent member of Southampton Sholing Corps and is involved in youth work in her division. When Faye was a teenager, the Army was a safe place when she faced bullying for her sexuality at school. Faye’s hope for The Salvation Army is that every corps can be a safe place for LGBTQ+ young people, just like it was for her.

Matt is the Youth Specialist (Leader Development) for the UK and Ireland Territory's Children and Youth Department. He has 20 years of experience as an employed and volunteer youth worker. Matt played a key role in the development and roll-out of An Introduction to Pastorally Supporting LGBTQ+ Young People.

Nazia is an officer of the Pakistan Territory, currently serving in the UK and Ireland Territory as the corps officer at Stockport Heaton Norris with an additional appointment as an intercultural officer. Before she started officer training at William Booth College in London, Nazia worked as a qualified staff nurse and midwife, and as a health and parenting programme consultant for The Salvation Army in Pakistan. In 2022, she attended The Salvation Army’s International Symposium on Human Sexuality in Singapore.

The Moral and Social Issues Council (MASIC) reports to Cabinet, The Salvation Army’s senior spiritual leadership team in the UK and Ireland Territory.

Its role includes:

• Providing an ethical perspective and advice to territorial leadership
• Helping Salvationists engage in moral and social issues in their communities

The council includes officers, members and employees appointed by the Chief Secretary and is chaired by Major Nick Coke (Territorial Co-ordinator for Justice and Reconciliation). It aims to reflect the diversity of the territory and draw upon the skills, academic research, biblical and theological scholarship, and experience of its members and the wider Salvation Army.

Territorial Moral and Social Issues Councils support the work of the International Moral and Social Issues Council, which reports to the General and is responsible for The Salvation Army’s International Positional Statements.
