  • ‘A fool thinks that there is no God. People like that are bad. They do evil things. None of them does anything that is good’ (Psalm 53:1, EasyEnglish Bible).

1926

The 23 October War Cry featured a ‘Welsh widow and her three children’ who found ‘a double salvation in Australia’:

‘She was a Welsh war widow and arrived in Australia under the General’s Widows’ Scheme. With two little girls and a boy hanging on to her skirts she told a newspaper man that England was in a bad way through unemployment. Indeed, it is “the land of ghosts and shadows”. She had wanted to get abroad to give her children a chance.

‘Her husband, when on furlough from France, used to say, “The Salvation Army people are kind to us over there, and if I am taken, they will be kind to those I leave behind.” She had appealed to the Army, had been accepted, and here she was in Melbourne.

‘She made her way to the Army hall and walked right to the mercy seat where she got gloriously saved. Now, she plays with skill in the orchestra at that corps, and all her children are happy Salvationists.’

A few weeks earlier the 25 September War Cry had caried the headline, ‘Tide Rising at Merthyr,’ with the sub-heading, ‘Notable characters among the 70 captures.’ The report read, ‘Awakening scenes have for the past 15 weeks been frequently noted in Merthyr Tydfil… This has impressed the townsfolk very deeply. Some notable characters have been influenced by the new spirit which is passing through the town and inspiring testimonies are being given at every meeting by the converts.’

Prayer

  • Pray for those who are finding new life and starting that life with eyes fixed on God.
  • Assess where and when your new life started and praise God for that. Now pray that those who are starting new lives today will be similarly encouraged in their faith.
