Day 26: Praying for those whose Christian faith changes their lifestyle (1899)
13 July 2024
Join with Salvationists of the Wales Division for day 26 of 150 days of prayer.
- ‘Test me, Lord, and see how I have lived. Look into my mind and see my thoughts. I always know I can trust you, because of your faithful love. So I live to please you’ (Psalm 26:2–3, EasyEnglish Bible).
1899
‘The publican’s wife accosted the lieutenant because some of her best customers have joined the Army and are taking their wages to their wives and families instead of the publican’s till.’
(War Cry, 6 August 1887)
The lieutenant responsible for the Society of Ebenezer in Deiniolen would not have been discouraged by the publican’s wife. Rather he would have been encouraged by the real change – transformation – he could see in his new soldiers. This initial success faltered and the society was closed. However, on 14 October 1899 it was reopened and new soldiers were enrolled.
Prayer
- Pray for someone you know whose transformation by the Holy Spirit has changed their lifestyle.
- If that person is you, give praise for the Spirit’s power in your life.
Closing thoughts on the 1890s
The 1890s continued the growth and outreach of the previous decade. The Movement was becoming more organised. The creation of circle corps – a group of corps in a relatively small area that could encourage and support each other – was one example of an intentional and strategic approach to outreach. The spontaneous outreach of soldiers also continued to be important. Effort was made to respect Welsh culture, not least by using the Welsh language.
