Day 133: Praying for BP sections in corps and communities (2006)
28 October 2024
Join with Salvationists of the Wales Division for day 133 of 150 days of prayer.
- 'It is good for a family of God’s people to live together in peace. Yes! It brings great pleasure!' (Psalm 133:1, EasyEnglish Bible).
2006
In 2006, Tom Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music.
Major David Wise remembers an incident from that year:
‘Sir Tom came to a Salvation Army funeral in Gilfach Goch. Major Doreen Jones – originally from Pyle and Kenfig Hill – ran the corps for many years in retirement. She told me that one day she conducted a house funeral, with Sir Tom present as one of the mourners. He came because he had gone to school with the man. During the service, Doreen had to tell one of her soldiers, who was talking, to be quiet and show respect. Afterwards, Sir Tom said to Doreen, “Major, I’m very impressed with the way you control your troops!”’
A 2006 newspaper cutting in the Tenby Corps history book, headed, ‘Honour for Guides’, reads:
‘The first youth civic award to be presented at the [Milford Haven] Founder’s Day ceremonial went to Hakin 1st Guides for their work to bring Christmas gifts and food to needy families over the last 15 years.
‘Each year, Guides sort and wrap gifts donated through This Morning Pass the Parcel appeal. They also shop and collate food parcels which are allocated and distributed with the gifts by The Salvation Army.
‘Guide leader Wendy Barnett said 66 families were helped in this way last Christmas and the Guides are looking forward to serving the community in this way for many years to come.’
