On the back page of 1 May War Cry there was a feature called ‘One Man and His Work: Scenes from the life of Lieutenant Stuart Day, commanding officer at Newport Central’, consisting of five photographs with the following captions:

  • Collecting bread from a local supermarket to be distributed to needy homes.
  • The lieutenant and his wife conduct a Sunday morning meeting.
  • The lieutenant in his office, interviewing two women who have requested help.
  • Selling the War Cry in a public house.
